Koh Samui Airport (USM): Arrivals, Departures & Taxis 2026

Koh Samui Airport (USM) is an open-air airport 2 km from Chaweng. Arrivals, departures, lounge, taxi fares from ~500 THB and the 2026-2030 terminal works.

What Is Koh Samui Airport (USM)?

Koh Samui Airport has the IATA code USM and ICAO code VTSM. It is a small open-air airport about 2 km (10 minutes) from Chaweng, owned and run by Bangkok Airways since 1989. It is international: Singapore, Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur flights land here. A fixed-price airport taxi to Chaweng costs about 500 THB (~14 USD) per car (as of 2026).

Key takeaways

  • Airport code USM (IATA), VTSM (ICAO). Domestic and international terminals sit about 50 m apart, both open-sided.
  • Bangkok Airways runs the airport and most flights. Scoot (Singapore) and Berjaya Air (Kuala Lumpur-Subang) also fly in 2026.
  • Taxis are fixed-price per car, paid at the arrivals counter: roughly 300-500 THB to Chaweng, Bophut and Choeng Mon, up to 900 THB to Lamai.
  • Grab and Bolt cannot enter the forecourt; meet drivers at the pickup point outside.
  • No free Bangkok Airways Boutique Lounge at USM. A Blue Ribbon Club day pass is about 950 THB (~27 USD) for economy.
  • Terminal works are reported for Q2 2026 to 2030. Check status before you fly.

Which Airlines and Routes Serve Koh Samui Airport?

Bangkok Airways flies most routes: about 21 flights a day from Bangkok Suvarnabhumi (BKK) and about 3 from Don Mueang (DMK), plus Phuket, Krabi, Chiang Mai, Singapore, Hong Kong (daily, PG805/806, about 3 to 3h30, per aggregator schedule listings) and seasonal U-Tapao. Scoot flies Singapore about 28 times a week. Berjaya Air runs Kuala Lumpur (Subang) charter packages. Thai Airways no longer serves USM.

Singapore note: Bangkok Airways suspended Singapore-Samui from 25 Oct 2026 to 28 Mar 2027 (Aerotelegraph, 3 Jun 2026), but Scoot still flies it. How Does Arrival at Koh Samui Airport Work?

International arrivals go through immigration first, then baggage claim, customs and the arrivals hall. Domestic arrivals go straight to baggage. SIM counters, an exchange booth and the taxi counter are all within a short walk of the carousels.

Option Cost (as of 2026) Where Good for
Airport taxi counter ~500 THB (~14 USD) to Chaweng Counter in arrivals Fixed fare, no app
Hotel or resort car Usually above counter price Driver with name sign Late arrivals, families
Grab or Bolt Often cheaper to the east coast Pickup point on the public road Short rides, app users
Songthaew 50-100 THB per person Main road outside Light luggage, tight budgets

Songthaews do not pick up inside the airport; walk out to the main road to flag one (taxi-fares dataset, checked Oct 2026). Allow extra time for immigration when several international flights land together, especially if you have a ferry to catch.

How Much Is a Taxi from Koh Samui Airport to the Beaches?

The arrivals taxi counter sells fixed zone fares per vehicle, shared by up to four people. Counter prices sit at the high end of what drivers charge: Chaweng, Bophut and Choeng Mon about 500 THB (~14 USD), Lamai up to 900 THB (~26 USD), Nathon up to 1,140 THB (~33 USD). Source: Welcome Pickups, the counter zone list, checked Oct 2026.

Area Counter fare per car Drive time
Chaweng, Bophut, Choeng Mon ~500 THB (~14 USD) 10-20 min
Maenam up to ~800 THB (~23 USD) 20-25 min
Lamai up to ~900 THB (~26 USD) 25-35 min
Nathon up to ~1,140 THB (~33 USD) 30-45 min

Far west beaches such as Lipa Noi and Taling Ngam sit in the top zone at about 1,520 THB (~43 USD). Grab drivers and pre-booked shuttles often quote less, so the counter price is a ceiling, not a norm. For a fuller breakdown see airport to Chaweng and the taxi and Grab guide. Chaweng and Choeng Mon are the nearest beaches, and Bang Rak is just beyond.

What Is the Open-Air Terminal Like?

Both terminals are open-sided buildings with tropical gardens. Air-conditioned space is limited to the gift shop, ticket office, toilets and lounge, so expect heat and humidity even at check-in. The domestic and international terminals are about 50 m apart.

  • SIM cards: counters for the three main Thai networks. A tourist SIM needs your passport to register.
  • Money: currency exchange and ATMs in arrivals. Compare the rate against town before changing large sums.
  • Lounge: there is no free Bangkok Airways Boutique Lounge at USM. Its blog of 9 Nov 2025 lists Boutique lounges at Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket only. The paid Blue Ribbon Club day pass is about 950 THB (~27 USD) for economy passengers; prices change, so check the page.
  • Other services: car hire desks (daytime hours only), hotel booking desk, baggage storage, cafes and local-product shops, per the airport’s own site.
  • VAT refund: no source consulted confirms a tourist VAT refund counter at USM. Ask at the airport, or check the Thai Revenue Department’s VAT refund rules, before counting on one.

How Early Should I Arrive for Departures?

Arrive at least 90 minutes before a domestic departure and 2 hours before an international one. The small terminal has one security checkpoint per side, and queues build when several Bangkok Airways flights leave together, mainly midday and late afternoon. Check-in closes well before departure, so confirm your airline’s cut-off.

Cabin baggage in economy is 5 kg per most sources, though some sites quote 7 kg; check the rule on your ticket. Departure facilities are limited: cafes, a few shops, two duty-free outlets on the international side and the lounge. Buy water and snacks, then go to the gate. USM is privately run, so charges are set by Bangkok Airways rather than the state operator AOT, and are normally included in the ticket price.

Which Airport Is Closest to Koh Samui?

Koh Samui Airport (USM) is closest, 2 km from Chaweng and on the island itself. Alternatives are on the mainland: Surat Thani (URT) with a bus and ferry link, Nakhon Si Thammarat (NST), Phuket (HKT) and Krabi (KBV). Flying direct is fastest, about 1h15m from Bangkok gate to gate.

Fly-and-ferry through Surat Thani takes about 3-5 hours door to door but can cost less than half the airfare on budget carriers. If you are short on time or flexible on budget, fly direct; if you are optimising for cost, take a mainland flight and a ferry. See the Surat Thani route, the Phuket and Krabi guide and the full how to get to Koh Samui guide.

Is Koh Samui Airport Being Expanded in 2026?

Terminal works are reported for Q2 2026 to 2030, with annual capacity of about 6 million passengers, up from about 2 million (TTR Weekly, March 2026). Other reports mention more gates and check-in points, but the exact start date and scope are not confirmed, so treat them as plans.

Work on a small open-air airport usually means shifted check-in areas and signage, not closure. Confirm current status on Bangkok Airways’ Samui Airport page if it would affect your plans.

How Do I Get from the Airport to the Ferry Piers?

The nearest pier is Bang Rak (Big Buddha), a few kilometres away, so expect about 500 THB (~14 USD) at the counter (zone fare, 2026), or less from a driver outside. Catamarans run from Bang Rak to Koh Phangan; see the Koh Samui to Koh Phangan ferry guide and the ferry piers overview.

Maenam Pier is about 6 km away (up to ~800 THB, ~23 USD). Nathon Pier, the west-coast car-ferry port, is 35-45 minutes away (up to ~1,140 THB, ~33 USD). Most operators ask you to arrive 30-45 minutes before departure, so add that to your transfer time.

FAQ

What is the Koh Samui airport code?

The IATA code is USM and the ICAO code is VTSM. The airport is also called Samui International Airport. It sits in Bo Phut in the north of the island, about 2 km from Chaweng, and handles international flights to Singapore, Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur as well as domestic routes.

Does Grab work at Samui airport?

Grab operates on Koh Samui but cannot pick up inside the arrivals forecourt. Book a ride after landing, then walk to the marked pickup point on the public road outside. Coverage is strongest around Chaweng, Bophut and Lamai, and less reliable toward the west and south coasts.

How much is a taxi from Koh Samui airport to Chaweng?

A fixed-price airport taxi to Chaweng costs about 500 THB (~14 USD) per car as of 2026, for a 10-15 minute ride, paid at the arrivals counter. App rides can be lower, around 300 THB. The fare covers the whole vehicle, so it splits cheaply among up to four people.

Is there a lounge at Koh Samui airport?

There is no free Bangkok Airways Boutique Lounge at USM. The paid Blue Ribbon Club lounge offers seating, workspaces and light refreshments, with an economy day pass of about 950 THB (~27 USD). Card-holder access is listed on the Bangkok Airways lounge page; check current pricing there.

Does Bangkok Airways own Koh Samui airport?

Yes. Bangkok Airways has owned and operated the airport since it opened in 1989, making USM one of the few privately owned commercial airports in Thailand. That explains the open-air boutique terminals and a fee structure separate from state-run AOT airports.

How early should I arrive for a flight from Samui?

Arrive 90 minutes before a domestic flight and 2 hours before an international one. Check-in closes well before departure, and queues grow when several flights leave together. Cabin baggage is 5 kg in economy per most sources, though some sites quote 7 kg, so check your ticket.
