Verdict: Anantara Lawana scores 7.6 out of 10
Anantara Lawana Koh Samui Resort scores 7.6 out of 10 in the Samui69 file. It is a 122-room, 5-star resort on the quiet north end of Chaweng, 5-10 minutes from the airport, and it suits couples who book a private pool villa, families who want a kids club in the rate, and guests who rate service above everything. It is a poor match for swimmers who need a deep beach at every tide, for guests with reduced mobility and for anyone who dislikes hotel food prices: access scores 4.6, beach 6.0 and value 6.3. Rooms started around 6,300 THB (~180 USD) a night in the sources checked on 1 October 2026.
Method: 157 guest reviews read one by one on Tripadvisor, 96% of them from the last 18 months. HolidayCheck, Booking.com and HotelsCombined gave aggregate scores only. Checked 1 October 2026. Every judgement below is what guests report or what the file shows.
What does the brochure say about Anantara Koh Samui Lawana?
The resort lists 122 rooms, suites and pool villas, from about 55 to 196 sqm, on a hillside of tropical garden that runs down to a private beachfront. The beachfront and public areas were renovated in November 2024. The postal address is in Bophut (92/1 Moo 2), but the hotel sells itself as north Chaweng, and the airport is 5-10 minutes away by car. The Michelin Guide lists the property.
On paper the facilities are a large beachfront infinity pool, private plunge pools in suites and villas, a shared lap pool in the residences, the Anantara Spa, a fitness centre, a kids club included in the room rate, daily yoga, Muay Thai and fitness classes, a cooking class and free kayaks and stand-up paddleboards. Dining runs across Tree Tops, Cay, Ocean Kiss and Sandal, plus the Singing Bird Lounge bar.
The hotel website claims Green Growth 2050 Gold certification and composting. Those are hotel claims: one guest in the file mentions eco initiatives, which is not enough to confirm visible practice. Pets are allowed in the Anantara Pool Suites only, up to 2 pets of 25 kg each, for 1,500 THB (~43 USD) per pet per night. Parking is free on site.
What do guests actually report?
Platform scores sit high. Tripadvisor shows 4.5 out of 5 from 3,638 reviews, with service at 4.7 and value at 4.3. HolidayCheck shows 5.5 out of 6 from 177 reviews, and 90% recommend the hotel. Booking.com gives 9.1 out of 10 from 747 reviews, with staff at 9.6, and HotelsCombined shows 9.0 from 1,276 reviews. You can read the raw pages on Tripadvisor and HolidayCheck.
The 157-review sample shows where the Samui69 score of 7.6 comes from:
| Category | Mentions (+ / -) | Score |
|---|---|---|
| Staff and service | 125 / 8 | 9.4 |
| Breakfast | 50 / 8 | 8.6 |
| Cleanliness | 40 / 7 | 8.9 |
| Wellness and activities | 28 / 3 | 8.8 |
| Beach | 25 / 14 | 6.0 |
| Accessibility | 3 / 9 | 4.6 |
| Value for money | 12 / 14 | 6.3 |
Staff praise is the loudest signal in the file. Around 10 guests name Cookie, Irene, Fern, Arthur or Baimon as highlights, and two Muay Thai trainers are praised by first name. Problems that do occur, such as a wrong order or a missed turndown, are reported as rare and quickly fixed. The weak spots sit in the physical site: the file shows a resort that treats guests very well and asks them to climb a lot of stairs.
Wellness is a quiet strength. Free Muay Thai, yoga, fitness classes, a cooking class and kayaks collect 28 positive mentions against 3 negative. The complaints are small: yoga is capped at 6 guests and mosquitoes bother some people at beach sessions.
What are the rooms and villas like?
Rooms score 8.4 with 32 positive and 10 negative mentions. Guests describe the pool suites and pool villas as spacious, and the category names in the brochure cover Deluxe rooms, Garden View Suites, Pool Access Villas, Family Pool Villas, Two Bedroom Sea View villas and an Oceanfront Residence. The negatives are specific: some plunge pool rooms are dark and get little sun, luggage storage is tight and a few rooms have no seating.
Views score 7.5. Sea view villas get sunrise and Gulf views from the upper levels, while garden and plunge pool rooms are enclosed by planting.
Beds are a small but positive topic: 8 positive and 3 negative mentions, with the complaints about noise from upstairs neighbours and not about mattresses. Bathrooms split evenly, with 5 positive and 5 negative mentions. Outdoor showers in the villas are liked, while a few guests call the bathrooms dark or tired in older rooms and complain about towel space.
Cleanliness scores 8.9: twice-daily housekeeping is reported, and only 7 guests mention dirt, mosquitoes or smells along some paths. Condition scores 8.0 after the November 2024 refresh. The negatives are a sewer smell in some areas, a dated gym and one storm power cut.
How good are the pools and the beach?
The pool scores 7.7 with 30 positive and 10 negative mentions. The large beachfront infinity pool is the main draw, and private plunge pools come with suites and villas. The complaints are predictable: loungers reserved with towels, little shade, warm water and crowds of children in high season.
The beach is the weakest of the big features and scores 6.0 (25 positive, 14 negative). It is private, clean and shallow, with calm water that some guests like, free kayaks and stand-up paddleboards. About 14 of 157 guests report limits: coral and rocks, low tide that makes swimming impossible, murky water, fishing boats and sea lice. Several of those reports date from 2025 and 2026. If the sea matters more than the villa, read the Chaweng beach guide and compare it with the quieter stretch at Bophut.
Location scores 7.6 (25 positive, 5 negative). The resort sits at the quiet north end, about 20 minutes on foot from central Chaweng, and a taxi costs around 300 THB (~9 USD). Guests praise the calm that comes with that, while some find it far and wait for buggies. For transfers and moving around, see the guides on how to get to Koh Samui and getting around.
What are the food, drink and spa like?
Breakfast is the best food story in the file, scoring 8.6 (50 positive, 8 negative). It is served at Ocean Kiss on the beachfront, as a wide buffet with an a la carte menu, and is included in the rate. The complaints: loud and crowded at peak, slow coffee and the odd wrong order.
Dinner scores 7.6 (40 positive, 18 negative). The eight-course menu at Tree Tops and Cay are the named favourites, while Ocean Kiss and Sandal get mixed comments. At least 6 guests say on-site dining is expensive and that they ate outside instead. The Singing Bird Lounge and the Sandal bar score 8.2 (12 positive, 1 negative), with cocktails, bay views and a daily happy hour.
The Anantara Lawana spa scores 7.9 on 12 positive and 2 negative mentions. Most guests praise the therapists, while one found the treatment disappointing and overpriced. The file does not give a price list, so treat any figure as a hotel-rate guess and compare with island prices in the spas and massage guide. The gym is the weakest amenity: 3 guests call it adequate and 3 call it dated or substandard, for a score of 6.3. A steam room and sauna are charged per guest.
Where does Anantara Lawana fall short?
The beach. About 14 reviews report low tide, rocks, murky water or sea lice. The hotel solves this with the pool and free kayaks, but it is not a swim-any-time beach.
Steps and access. Accessibility scores 4.6, with 3 positive and 9 negative mentions. The grounds are hillside, guests report steep stairs to breakfast and the beach, and one account counts more than 80 steps to the pool. Buggies are on call but wait times are mentioned. Reduced mobility is a poor match unless you negotiate a room close to the pool.
Value. The Deluxe room is listed from about 6,255 THB (~179 USD) on the official site, and the top of the range was around 10,500 THB (~300 USD) in the sources checked. The value score is 6.3 with 12 positive and 14 negative comments. Pool villa guests call it good value, while food, minibar and massage are pricey, and some guests report confusion over booking packages.
Noise and smells. Quiet scores 7.0 (12 positive, 10 negative). Reports cover road and motorbike noise, neighbours, children and AC units, plus one May 2025 closure of a restaurant area for construction without notice. Two guests report smoke or weed smell from neighbouring rooms or paths.
Families dominate. Kids score 8.4, but loud children at breakfast and at the pool are a repeated theme, and couples score 7.6 because no adults-only zone exists.
Who should book, and who should not?
Book it if you are:
- a couple or honeymooner who wants a private pool villa and attentive service
- a family that will use the kids club, babysitting and kids menu
- a guest who values named, responsive staff over design
- someone who wants a calm base a short ride from Chaweng, not in the middle of it
Skip it if you are:
- a swimmer who needs deep water at all tides
- a guest with reduced mobility or a stroller-heavy trip
- a light sleeper who needs silence
- a budget traveller who dislikes resort prices for dinner and extras
Pros and cons
Pros
- Named staff praised in most reviews (125 positive against 8 negative), with fast problem solving
- Spacious pool suites and villas, spotless housekeeping and a renovated beachfront (November 2024)
- Wide breakfast, Tree Tops and Cay dining, free Muay Thai, yoga, kayaks and a kids club
Cons
- Shallow, rocky beach, with low tide and murk stopping swimming in about 14 reviews
- Steep hillside layout, with 80+ steps to the pool in one account
- Pricey food and extras, crowded breakfast, loungers reserved with towels
What are the alternatives?
- Sala Samui Chaweng: scores 8.0 in the file. Private pools and walkable Chaweng suit couples and families with babies, but guests report seaweed, shallows and low tide on its beach too.
- Anantara Bophut: scores 7.8. A sister property for families and a walkable Bophut base, noisier with loud afternoon pool sessions and no adults-only pool.
