Verdict: The Ritz-Carlton, Koh Samui scores 7.1 out of 10
The Ritz-Carlton, Koh Samui scores 7.1 out of 10 in the Samui69 file. It is a 175-suite and villa resort on a private bay in Choeng Mon, 10-15 minutes from the airport, and it suits couples, honeymooners and spa-focused stays in a pool villa. It is a poor match for swimmers who want a sandy beach, budget diners and anyone who wants to walk to cafes: beach scores 4.6, value 6.3 and condition 5.8. Entry rates started around 10,500 THB (~300 USD) a night in the sources checked on 30 September 2026.
Method: 160 guest reviews read one by one, 158 of them on Tripadvisor, plus one HolidayCheck review and one detailed blog report, 89% from the last 18 months. Booking.com, Agoda and Trip.com gave aggregate scores only. Checked 30 September 2026. Every judgement below is what guests report or what the file shows.
What does the brochure say?
The resort opened in October 2017 on a cliff and hillside site of about 58 acres (a hotel claim) around a private bay at the northeastern tip of the island. Published figures give 175 suites and villas, with the Essential Suite at 95 m2. On paper it has a 75 m infinity pool, private pools in the villas, a Spa Village, a kids club, a tennis court, free Muay Thai, Pilates and kayaking, and several restaurants: Shook! for breakfast, Pak Tai for Thai food, The Ranch steakhouse, Sea Breeze and Baan Talat. The hotel claims up to 11 venues; guests and the file confirm six to eleven. A free buggy service runs inside the grounds.
Pets are not allowed, service animals excepted. Parking is free on site. The hotel points to Marriott’s Serve 360 programme for sustainability. That is a brand claim: the file found no certificate for this property.
What do guests actually report?
Platform scores sit high. Tripadvisor shows 4.7 out of 5 from 1,926 reviews and ranks the hotel 11 of 207 in Bophut (Tripadvisor page). HolidayCheck shows 5.5 out of 6 from 57 reviews, with 93% recommending the hotel (HolidayCheck page). Booking.com gives 8.8 out of 10 from 431 reviews, Agoda 9.1 from 47 and Trip.com 9.0 from 335, all from search snippets.
The 160-review sample explains why the Samui69 score is lower than those headline numbers:
| Category | Mentions (+ / -) | Score |
|---|---|---|
| Staff and service | 120 / 18 | 8.7 |
| Spa and massage | 52 / 2 | 9.0 |
| Rooms and design | 62 / 10 | 8.8 |
| Restaurants | 28 / 26 | 6.5 |
| Beach | 10 / 17 | 4.6 |
| Condition and age | 6 / 14 | 5.8 |
| Value for money | 14 / 30 | 6.3 |
Staff, spa and rooms carry the score. Guests name therapists, concierge staff and breakfast hosts, and many use the WhatsApp butler service. The weak spots are the ones the platform averages hide: value is the lowest Tripadvisor subscore at 4.5 against 4.8 for rooms, service, location, cleanliness and sleep, and the complaints cluster around prices, the beach and upkeep after about nine years.
What are the suites and pool villas like?
Rooms score 8.8, the best physical category, with 62 positive and 10 negative mentions. Guests describe large, modern suites with balconies and praise the private pool villas. The negatives are small: no dining table in some rooms, and some worn details. Views score 8.6 (26 positive, 4 negative): the ultimate pool villas on the hillside get the sea, while family villas and some garden rooms have views blocked by trees.
Beds score 7.9. The Tripadvisor sleep subscore is 4.8 out of 5, but 7 guests report noise through doors and corridors in suites. Bathrooms score 6.9: guests like the Diptyque amenities and the space, while 6 report rust in shower areas, damaged shelving or other upkeep lapses. Cleanliness scores 7.7 with 24 positive and 12 negative mentions. The complaints are about arrival: cobwebs, glitter and an unclean room at check-in, missed turndown, dirty loungers.
Condition is the clearest weakness in the physical product, at 5.8 (6 positive, 14 negative). The resort is about nine years old and guests report worn rattan loungers, loose pool tiles and loose railings. Three guests between October 2025 and February 2026 describe power or water cuts, and one mentions bare wires. A guest reported the lobby under renovation in July 2026.
How good are the pools and the beach?
The pool scores 7.4 (25 positive, 14 negative). The main infinity pool is 75 m long and guests like it, and the villas add private pools. The complaints are crowding at peak times, too few sunbeds, slow poolside food service, and one guest who found a private pool uncleaned for two weeks. There is no adults-only pool.
The beach is the weakest score in the file, 4.6 with 10 positive and 17 negative mentions. The bay is private, but guests describe rocks, coarse or sharp sand, poor swimming and some litter and debris. Fish and snorkelling are praised by some. At least 8 guests call the beach rocky, coarse or littered. Choeng Mon beach, the sandy alternative, is about 15 minutes away: see the Choeng Mon beach guide.
Location scores 6.4. The airport is 10-15 minutes away and the bay is quiet, but the site is hilly and spread out. Guests report buggy waits of 10-15 minutes, and once 30-40, and taxis for local food. A free shuttle to Chaweng is mentioned by guests. Grounds score 7.0: stunning over 58 acres, but steep and buggy dependent. For the wider area, read the Choeng Mon area guide.
What are the food, drink and spa like?
Breakfast scores 7.0 (36 positive, 19 negative). The Shook! buffet has live stations and an omelette station that guests like. The complaints are about peak times: chaos, a canteen feel, heat without air conditioning, food running short once and slow coffee.
Dinner is where the price gap shows. Restaurants score 6.5 with 28 positive and 26 negative mentions. Pak Tai, The Ranch and the fire shows are praised. At least 10 guests mention high prices: a som tum at 650 THB (~19 USD) against 95 THB outside is the example quoted. Lunch choice is limited and some restaurants have no air conditioning. The bar scores 7.8: cocktails are praised and the hotel pours complimentary drinks and snacks from 17:30 to 18:30.
The Spa Village scores 9.0, the highest in the file, with 52 positive and 2 negative mentions. About 50 guests single out the spa or named therapists, and many call it the best massage they had. Treatment prices are hotel-level. Wellness scores 7.6: free Muay Thai, Pilates and kayaking are confirmed. The gym scores 5.2, with guests calling it too small, without a sauna or steam room.
Where does The Ritz-Carlton, Koh Samui fall short?
Value. This is the weakest subscore on Tripadvisor (4.5) and the file agrees: 14 positive and 30 negative mentions. Dining runs 5-6 times town prices, one guest calls 800 USD a night poor value, and another says it was worth it against Dubai. Entry rates of 10,500 THB (~300 USD) rise to about 19,000 THB (~543 USD) in the period checked.
The beach. Anyone who books a Samui resort for swimming from the sand should read the 4.6 score twice. The nearest sandy beach needs a car.
Upkeep. Loose railings, worn loungers and outages are reported by a small but steady group, and the lobby was under renovation in July 2026. Ask the hotel which areas are closed for your dates.
Distances. Buggies are free and run 24 hours, but waits are reported and the slope makes walking hard. Accessibility scores 6.8.
Peak crowds. Breakfast and the main pool fill up at busy times, which also pulls the quiet score down to 7.2.
