Verdict: W Koh Samui scores 7.8 out of 10
W Koh Samui (also listed as W Retreat Koh Samui) scores 7.8 out of 10 in the Samui69 file. It is a 74-villa, 5-star resort on the Maenam coast, and every villa has its own plunge pool. It suits couples and honeymooners, and guests who rate service and breakfast above everything else. It is a poor match for guests with reduced mobility, families wanting a kids club, walkers who want shops and restaurants at the gate, and anyone on a tight budget: accessibility scores 4.5, kids 5.5, condition 5.8 and value 6.8. Rooms started around 13,600 THB (~389 USD) a night in the sources checked on 1 October 2026.
Method: 196 Tripadvisor reviews read one by one, 179 of them dated April 2025 or later, set against aggregate scores from HolidayCheck, Booking.com, Trip.com and Kayak, which gave scores and snippets but no individual reviews to read. Checked 1 October 2026. Every judgement below is what guests report or what the file shows.
What does the brochure say?
The hotel opened in November 2010 and the file shows no renovation date. Published figures give 74 villas, each with a private plunge pool, an outdoor shower and a bathtub, spread over a hillside that drops to Maenam beach. The address is 4/1 Moo 1, Maenam, and the hotel’s own site is on Marriott.
Facilities on paper: a main pool and a lobby pool, Kitchen Table for breakfast and all-day dining, Namu for Japanese food, WooBar and the Sip beach bar, AWAY Spa, the FIT gym, a Muay Thai trainer, yoga and pilates sessions, and kayaks and paddleboards. Parking is free on site. Pets are allowed per a third-party listing, one per room up to 18 kg with no fee, but no guest in the file confirms this. A Green Leaf certification shows up on a listing too. That is a hotel claim: no guest or property source in the file confirms visible practice.
What do guests actually report?
Platform scores are high. Tripadvisor shows 4.7 out of 5 from 2,819 reviews and ranks it first of 32 hotels in Maenam, with rooms, cleanliness, service and sleep at 4.8 and value at 4.4. HolidayCheck shows 5.8 out of 6 from 41 reviews, and every reviewer recommends it. Booking.com shows 9.2 out of 10 from 216 reviews, Trip.com 8.4 from 158 and Kayak 9.2 from 358.
The 196-review sample puts numbers on where the score comes from and where it leaks:
| Category | Mentions (+ / -) | Score |
|---|---|---|
| Staff and service | 185 / 6 | 9.6 |
| Breakfast | 50 / 2 | 9.5 |
| Rooms and design | 70 / 12 | 8.6 |
| Pool | 50 / 9 | 8.3 |
| Condition and age | 6 / 25 | 5.8 |
| Accessibility | 4 / 10 | 4.5 |
| Value for money | 18 / 14 | 6.8 |
Staff praise is the loudest signal in the file. Guests name Nancy, Pei Pei, Cookie and Bunny again and again, and about 10 describe a birthday or anniversary surprise with a fire show or a flower bath. About 12 guests praise the resort photographer Ton, often as a complimentary gift. The complaints are small: a room assignment error, a pushy review request at checkout, and one bartender who approached a solo guest about loungers.
The weak column is condition. About 25 guests say the resort looks tired at 15 years old, with scratched finishes, deteriorating bar areas and, in April 2026, a broken air conditioner in the gym. Others call the place well kept, which is why condition lands at 5.8 and not lower.
What are the villas like?
Rooms score 8.6, with 70 positive and 12 negative mentions. Guests describe spacious villas, praise the design, and single out the private pools and outdoor showers. Bathrooms score 8.3: large, with dual showers and a tub. A few guests mention water quality and suggest a shower filter, and one older review mentions stained sinks.
The negatives are worn finishes and dark jungle-side villas. Views score 8.8 because the lobby, the bars and most villas look over the bay and the sunset, while the jungle-side villas are far from the water. Beds score 9.0 on 14 positive and 1 negative mentions, and Tripadvisor’s sleep subscore is 4.8. The one sleep complaint in the file is loud cicadas, also raised in a HolidayCheck review.
Cleanliness scores 8.8: guests report immaculate rooms and housekeeping twice a day, with isolated mentions of mosquitoes. The two physical complaints that repeat are the steps and the buggy. Grounds score 6.4 and accessibility 4.5, because the layout is a hillside. HolidayCheck counts nearly 80 steps to the breakfast restaurant, and Tripadvisor guests report buggy waits of 3 to 15 minutes and say walking in the heat is hard.
How good are the pools and the beach?
The pool category scores 8.3 (50 positive, 9 negative) and most of that praise is for the private plunge pools. The negatives are about the main pool. Three reports in the file (November 2025, December 2025 and April 2026) describe it closed for maintenance without notice or dirty with sludge, and one guest reports a dirty private pool. Ask the hotel about the main pool before you book if it matters to you.
The beach scores 7.0 on 40 positive and 14 negative mentions. Guests like the quiet, the sunsets, the beach bar and the loungers reserved for in-house guests. They also report coarse sand, a silty and shallow entry and, from two guests, plastic and glass on the sand. Outside visitors also use the beach. For public access, tides and swimming conditions, read the W Beach guide, and for the wider bay see the Maenam beach guide.
Location scores 6.8, split 14 and 14. The coast is quiet. A travel-site listing gives 15 to 20 minutes by car to the airport and Fisherman’s Village is about 5 minutes by car, but guests say a taxi is needed for most trips and report fares of 400 to 700 THB (~11-20 USD). Guests also mention 30 minutes to Chaweng. For the evening-market side of the trip, read the Bophut Fisherman’s Village guide, and compare the two coasts in Bophut vs Maenam.
What is the food, drink and spa like?
Breakfast is the best story in the file: 9.5 on 50 positive and 2 negative mentions. The Kitchen Table serves a buffet plus a la carte, a daily changing menu, a Sunday brunch and a floating breakfast in the pool. Several guests call it the best hotel breakfast of a trip, and the only complaint is that some dishes repeat.
Restaurants score 8.4 (45 positive, 6 negative). Namu, the Japanese restaurant, gets praise for its sushi. Indian dishes are reported as inconsistent, some southern Thai flavours as sweet, and a few guests find the music too loud. The WooBar and Sip have DJ sets and a nightly fire show, and the bar scores 8.8 for creative cocktails. One fire show was cancelled by wind. The hotel restaurant search terms people use, such as W Hotel Samui restaurant and W Retreat Koh Samui restaurant, mostly point to Namu and Kitchen Table.
AWAY Spa scores 8.7: about 18 guests praise named therapists, one calls a massage among the best of their trip, and one reports too little pressure. The price is hotel-level, and “expensive” comes up. The FIT gym scores 8.0 and is described as well equipped and uncrowded, with 24 hour access reported by guests and one broken-AC complaint in April 2026. Wellness scores 8.0: yoga, pilates, tai chi, Muay Thai, cooking and cocktail classes, plus kayaks and paddleboards, some of them free. Guests call the programming inconsistent and some sessions short.
Where does W Koh Samui fall short?
Condition. The file shows 25 negative and 6 positive mentions. The resort is 15 years old and the file has no renovation date. Scratched finishes, tired bar areas and small repair lapses are the recurring words.
Access. Steps everywhere, no lift to breakfast, and a buggy that can take 3 to 15 minutes to arrive. Guests with reduced mobility should treat it as a poor match.
Kids. The file finds no kids club. Babysitting is a listing claim. Guests say the staff are kind to children and that baby amenities are provided, but several say there is little for kids to do and one calls it better for couples than families. The score is 5.5.
Value. Tripadvisor value is 4.4 out of 5 and Booking value is 8.4 out of 10. Kayak’s lowest rate is about 13,600 THB (~389 USD), and December averages around 31,800 THB (~909 USD), at 35 THB per USD, approximate. Guests split: some say it is pricey but worth it for the service, others say friends found cheaper places better. Billing confusion appears in a few reviews. Breakfast is the category most often named as good value.
Noise. Quiet scores 7.6. Guests report DJ sets, speakers and phone calls on the beach, loud cicadas, and daily construction and maintenance noise in a Trip.com review.
Who should book, and who should not?
Book it if you are:
- a couple or honeymooner who wants a private pool, sunsets and staff who make an occasion of it
- a guest who ranks service and breakfast above everything else
- someone who wants a private-pool villa on the north coast and can live with some wear
- a guest happy to use taxis and buggies
Skip it if you are:
- a guest with reduced mobility, since the hillside and steps are the file’s worst score
- a family wanting a kids club and structured children’s activities
- a traveller who wants to walk to shops and restaurants
- budget-minded, since the file shows high rates and pricey extras
Pros and cons
Pros
- Staff named and praised in most of 196 reviews (185 positive against 6 negative)
- Breakfast repeatedly called the best of a trip
- A private pool in every one of 74 villas, with sunset and sea views
Cons
- Wear and dated finishes flagged by about 25 guests; opened 2010
- Hillside with many steps, buggy waits and taxi dependence
- High rates, and a beach with coarse sand, silt and some litter
What are the alternatives?
- Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui: rated 8.3 in the file, with private pool villas, praised staff and a private but rocky beach. It costs more: rooms from about 36,500 THB (~1,043 USD), and guests flag high extras.
- Anantara Bophut Koh Samui: rated 7.8, the same as W. It has a kids club, free classes and a walk to Fisherman’s Village, and rooms from about 7,400 THB (~211 USD). The file flags noise from families and weak value.

FAQ
Does every villa at W Koh Samui have a private pool?
Yes. The file shows a private plunge pool in every one of the 74 villas, and pool guests praise them. The size of the pools is not confirmed in the sources, so the file gives no dimensions.
Is there a W Koh Samui day pass or beach club?
The file holds no day-pass terms. The WooBar and Sip are the resort’s bar venues, and guests report outside visitors on the beach. Ask the hotel before planning a day visit, and read the W Beach guide for public access to the sand.
Is W Koh Samui good for families?
Mixed. The staff are kind to children and baby amenities are reported, but the file finds no kids club and few activities, and the hillside has many steps. Kids score 5.5.
How far is W Koh Samui from the airport?
A travel-site listing gives 15 to 20 minutes by car. The file holds no guest timing. Guests say taxis for trips around the island cost about 400 to 700 THB (~11-20 USD).
Is W Koh Samui pet-friendly?
A third-party listing says one pet per room up to 18 kg with no fee. No guest in the file confirms it, so check the terms with the hotel before you book.
What do the review platforms say?
Tripadvisor shows 4.7 out of 5 from 2,819 reviews (Tripadvisor page), and HolidayCheck 5.8 out of 6 from 41 reviews (HolidayCheck page). Both sit above the Samui69 score because that score also weighs condition, access, kids and value, where the complaints gather.
